Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has decisively strengthened her political standing after a bold snap election delivered a sweeping victory for her ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), according to results reported by public broadcaster NHK. Elected less than four months ago, Takaichi has enjoyed strikingly high approval ratings, fueled by her image as a tireless worker and an unusually relatable figure in Japanese politics. As the nation’s first woman prime minister, she has broken long-standing barriers in a system traditionally dominated by men.
Her public appeal has been amplified by a savvy use of social media and moments of unexpected warmth, including viral clips such as an impromptu drum session to K-pop music alongside South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. These lighter moments have complemented her reputation as a hardline conservative with a disciplined leadership style.
By calling an early election, Takaichi sought to transform her personal popularity into a stronger mandate for the LDP, which had been weakened by recent scandals involving the misuse of political funds. The gamble paid off. Voters effectively endorsed her plans to pursue fiscal expansion in the world’s fourth-largest economy.
In a post on X following the vote, Takaichi also thanked US President Donald Trump for his recent endorsement, describing the future of the US-Japan alliance as “LIMITLESS.”

Sunday’s landslide means the LDP and its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, now have enough seats to chair every committee in the lower house, consolidating power to an extraordinary degree. Meanwhile, the largest opposition force, the Centrist Reform Alliance, suffered a crushing defeat, losing more than 100 of its 167 seats.
The decisive result gives Takaichi renewed authority to confront some of Japan’s most pressing challenges, including a rapidly aging population, rising living costs, a persistently weak yen, and increasingly strained relations with China.
Putting Her Leadership on the Line
Takaichi’s rise has been swift. A veteran lawmaker, she ascended to the top of Japanese politics last autumn after former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stepped down under pressure following a string of electoral losses for the LDP. She won the party presidency on October 4—her third attempt—and was elected prime minister on October 21, a landmark achievement in Japan’s patriarchal political landscape.
Just three months later, she dissolved parliament, calling the decision “profoundly weighty” at a January press conference. “By doing so,” she said at the time, “I am also putting my position as prime minister on the line.”
Her short tenure has drawn international attention, particularly for her relaxed and friendly interactions with world leaders. During an early meeting with President Trump, the two appeared unusually at ease. Trump later described her as “a delight,” saying he had come to know her well in a short time.
Days before the election, Trump offered his “total endorsement,” praising Takaichi as “a strong, powerful, and wise leader” who genuinely loves her country. He also signaled plans to welcome her to Washington in March. Trump has long admired Takaichi’s political mentor, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated in 2022.
Praise, Pushback, and a Tough Road Ahead
Often compared to Margaret Thatcher—whom she cites as an inspiration—Takaichi’s decisive leadership and emphasis on traditional values have won her admirers at home and abroad. But her tenure has not been without controversy.
Critics have raised concerns about her relentless work habits, including reports of 3 a.m. meetings with aides. More significantly, her blunt comments on Taiwan have sharply escalated tensions with Beijing.
In November, Takaichi broke with Japan’s long-standing strategic ambiguity by stating in parliament that a Chinese attack on Taiwan—just 60 miles from Japanese territory—could prompt a military response from Tokyo. China responded forcefully, canceling flights, restricting imports of Japanese seafood, and intensifying military patrols.
Despite these challenges, the snap election result leaves little doubt about her political strength.
